Whether together, 2m apart or through a device screen, nothing quite says “I love you” than a bottle of something special.

Chateau Changyu Moser XV Purple Air Comes From the East 2016 (£202, $267)
Lenz Moser, an Austrian wine pro with over 30 years winemaking experience, has put China on the global wine map.
His top-tier offering, “Purple Air,” has racked up countless awards and is clear proof that China can indeed produce phenomenal wines.
100 per cent estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon goes into this bottle, showcasing an exuberant burst of stewed dark meadow fruits, fresh cigar box and a generous dollop of baking spices and cedar oak.
This is Chateau Changyu Moser XV’s icon wine, along with the recently released 2016 Purple Air Comes From The East label. The 2016 Grand Vin is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has a deep garnet appearance and pronounced nose of distinct clove, toast and smoke—this vintage saw some 24 months in 80% small-format new oak—along with a touch of leathery development overlying a core of ripe mellowing cassis and herbaceous bramble fruit. On the palate, it is full-bodied with a robust but fairly well-integrated 15% alcohol, very Cabernet tannins (coating, crunchy and angular) and some buoyant acidity that lifts up the core of mellowing ripe black fruit complemented by marked toasted oak and some developing savory notes. With its long length and significant concentration, this wine is higher in quality than the 2016 Purple Air Comes From The East release. It can be drunk now but will repay cellaring over the next 5-6 years, at least.
Chateau Changyu Moser - XV PURPLE AIR 16 and XV GRAND VIN Cabernet Sauvignon 16
In September this year I had a video tasting with Lenz M. Moser and tasted six wines of Chateau Changyu. On the picture you can find two of their top wines with the just released XV Purple Air.
Lenz Moser started his career in the Lenz moser family business, worked for Mondavi in Europe and started his own wine brand called Laurenz V in 2005. His second activity from 2005 onwards was acting as the CEO of an importing company in Germany. In this capacity he met the people of Changyu first in 2005, heading into a close relationship with the leaders of this pioneering company. In 2015 they decided on a joint project: Chateau Changyu Moser XV, a partnership with the big goal of producing China’s best and most important wines.
They chose the Ningxia region (the emerging wine region) for this challenging project which is located in Central Western China on the fringes of the Gobi desert and feeds off the Yellow River.
With about 3.000 sun hours per year it's the best region to allow the berries to fully ripen at 1.100 meters above sea level.
They own 250 ha. of vines and the Chateau (built in 2013 for 70 milion euro) which houses an impressive 1.500 barrique cellar as well as a high-tech bottling line. About 90% of their vines are Cabernet Sauvignon. The most important variety for China.
My tasting notes:
Grand vin 2016 (87+ TSW) – about € 80
Aged in barriques (5 different coopers) for 24 months.
Dark ruby red color. On the medium(+) nose aromas of dark berries, cassis and spices with hints of vanilla, cedar and bell pepper.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with medium(+) acidity and ripe tannins. Round in the mouth with a good balance. Still young (greenish) but with a lot of potential.
Purple air 2016 (89+ TSW)
Dark ruby red color. On the medium(+) nose aromas of blackberries, cherries and cassis with hints of vanilla, cloves, cacao and tobacco.
On the palate dry, medium(+) bodied with less alcohol and fine ripe tannins. Flavours are a recall of the nose with a medium(+) length finish. This one was my favorite with more elegance. Very curious how this wine will develop.
In this first producer profile episode, a new segment of the podcast where I converse with wine producers about their wines - history and what is to come from them. I speak to Lenz Moser, Head winemaker of Chateau Changyu Moser XV in Ningxia China.
China may not be the first country that spring to mind when thinking about wine, but it is now on the top five country in number of vineyards and number of bottle produced for year - as always I like to explore what new and original is coming out in the greater wine world in my podcasts, and who is best that Lenz Moser as first guest with his fine wines produce in China one of the first contemporary winery in the whole country.
Lenz specialised in Cabernet sauvignon, although his previous experiences in Bordeaux and Napa valley, he says that he’s never seen such small berries in his 35years experience as winemaker and in Ningxia – He tell us why he like to work with them so much.
We talk about the Ningxia’s climate and the influence of the nearby Helen mountain ranges home of the first Chinese Appellation. This region faces very few climatic problems other than having jaw-dropping freezing temperatures of -30℃ and Lenz tell us how the vines in have to be bury to protect them from die and his white Cabernet an unique take on Cabernet Sauvignon. Also, with Lenz we talk about the Greater Chines market and I was surprised to hear that there is a bit of downslope in the wine consumption.

Chateau Changyu Moser XV, Purple Air Comes from the East Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Tasting note by Sylvia Wu (at London, 15 Sep 2020)
“A more fruit-driven and elegant approach to the 2016 vintage compared to the estate’s Grand Vin. This 100 % Cabernet Sauvignon from Helan Mountain East of Ningxia is a blend of 10 parcels from the estates 250 ha of vinyards. Aged in oak barrels for 24 months, the Purple Air has ripe black cherry and black peppers on the nose. Elegant coffee, blackberry juice and prune on the palate with a touch of green capsicum. The tannins are fine-grained, wrapping around a concentrated dark fruit core. The alcohol sits at 14.3%, almost a degree lower than the Grand Vin. It can develop further but it’s drinking nicely.”
In the laboratory of sensory analysis of the Odessa National Academy of Food Technologies, life is in full swing. This time, experts from the wine industry gathered to conduct an online tasting. This tasting has a rather unusual format. After all, the object of the study will be wine made in China by a famous Austrian winemaker.
Speech and benchmark tasting ( all 6 CCMXV wines and wines from Whispering Angel and Cos Estrournel) at the Rotary Club of Melk, Austria. Some opinion molders, some winery owners and other good clients presented. This we do also in order to spread the story of our wines to the public , targets towards opinion molders AND equally important to retain a feeling for the consumer how they react to China, the wines, the story.
Our chef winemaker Lenz Moser said he always been blown away by the positive reaction about the CCMXV project by the general public - the interest is super high , the knowledge of china limited and sometimes not always up to date - as he always emphasizes :
The story about modern china and its great people
The story of Changyu and its achievements as the oldest and best winery in china
And the story of the great cooperation between Changyu and the Lenz Moser family in creating china's "best of china" chateau and also gain recognition on a global bases
As said the judges at @sommelierwineawards: This may be one of the biggest surprises for the 2020 category - some people describe Ningxia as the Napa of China - and on this evidence it perhaps isn’t just a pr spin. It certainly looks like a region to keep your eye on.
Made by @lenz_m_moser and team in China, available in UK via @bibendumwine and in over 40 countries world wide (see our website) It’s exciting times for Chinese wine.
08/08/2005: MY FIRST EVER VISIT TO CHINA AND TO CHANGYU
06/09/2015: START MISSION “BEST OF CHINA” & BELONGING IN THE COMPANY OF THE WORLD’S FINEST What a journey / long march it was – and I do know it is just the beginning of something truly exciting/ FASCINATING. From the very first day in China I fell in LOVE with this country, its historic achievements and its people. And, it was a great woman, Mrs. Susan Tan, then and now head of export at Changyu Pioneer who greeted our small delegation in August 2005 with so much charm, wisdom and vision, that it did stick from the very beginning. The first 10 years of cooperation were a bit like a “purgatory” situation: ups and downs, yet a steep learning curve (we tried it the conventional way first …wrong move), yet we all knew the moment will come to have the chance of putting CHINA on the INTERNATIONAL WINE MAP. The basis for our great results was the creation of a truly superb relationship with the people of Changyu and its leaders, Mr. Zhou (Chairman), Mr. Sun (CEO), Dr Li (head of oenology and production), Mrs. Tan and many, many more. And, only in the last 2 years I had the honor of visiting 28 CITIES in China to promote our vision of Chateau Changyu Moser XV getting to know better also the China setup of Changyu in China – beyond wine making and production – wow! Yes, I am a true fan and I honestly think there is a new land of opportunity and this has to be China (yap, I know … is it perfect – no, but who is?). While we focused on sales and marketing of my first 10 years in China, neglecting strategic aspects of the business badly and paying not enough attention to the quality/ style of the wines, we did “THE RIGHT THING” EXACTLY 5 YEARS AGO. I still remember vividly Mr. Zhou, Mr. Sun and Mrs. Tan reminding myself of being a wine maker – which prompted the question: “WHY DON’T YOU MAKE THE WINES AT THE CHATEAU YOURSELF?” From this very moment our vision showed traction as we had the “once in a life time” chance to start from zero and to wine: NEW wines/ quality – NEW labels/ brand architecture – NEW strategy – NEW purpose - NEW innovation – NEW great story – NEW energy based on learnings from the first 10 years. Our 2015 defined PHILOSOPHY ON WINE MAKING: 1. powerful – not opulent 2. freshness and elegance 3. “some sex” (artsy elements) 4. sense of place 5. Perfect grape is king 6. bio dynamic (in the making) 7. bottle to look good 8. to be enjoyed without too much fuzz. This resulted in tangible progress on our vision: “BEST OF CHINA” & BELONGING IN THE COMPANY OF THE WORLD’S FINEST Let me therefore thank all partners on this long journey – all my friends at Changyu, all our great and esteemed partners on the receiving end and our team at Lenz M. Moser Projects for their endurance, their belief to be part of something unique in the world of wine – the emergency of a new chateau, which is the leader of its proud country – in surprising our customers / the consumers on a daily basis via discovery of something entirely NEW and unexpected. We still have a long way to go, Bob Mondavi would say “it is just the beginning” which we humbly confess, yet, I promise to give my very, very best in the future as I did in the past. The best is yet to come, AA YVS Lenz M. Moser, Austria, August 25th, 2020

20 wines entered the blind tasting - always in pairs of 2 whereby WEIN & CO choose the Austrian wines (crème de la crème in particular for the reds) and Lenz M. Moser brought his wines of Chateau Changyu Moser XV alongside other greats of China, such as Longdai, AoYun, Silver Heights, Legacy Peak & co. The result was a 2 ½ hours serious tasting, vivid discussion with the following result:
1. WOW - PÖCKL, Reve 2017 and MARKOWITSCH, Rosenberg 2017 were the frontrunners from Austria 2. WOW for the progress, Austrian reds have made – esp. when exposed to international competition, blindly 3. WOW on China, especially on achievements of Chateau Changyu Moser XV (a mere 50 months from the start) 4. WOW for China in Longdai, AoYun, Moser Family white 2017, especially: “PURPLE AIR COMES FORM THE EAST” 5. And, since this way of “unusual, unique” tastings was received so favorably, it will be continued in the nearfuture, in other countries too. It is the clear goal for the wines of Chateau Changyu Moser XV to be amongst the best of China, yet also belong in the company of the world’s finest. And as one of the participants, Adi Schmid, sommelier emeritus of “Steirereck” (after 41 years of service to the best Austrian restaurant) put it spot on: ”China and Chateau Changyu Moser XV in particular will continue to surprise and excite world wine lovers for the next ten year with its stunning quality and unmistakable style - before turning into a classic on the world stage. Lenz was happy with the result as the majority of wine writers picked “PURPLE AIR COMES FORM THE EAST”, the chateau’ new icon as their pick of the day. Especially exciting since it is the maiden vintage of this wine. Meanwhile you all know my ending of this: it is just the beginning and the best is yet to come! So let us have fun building this category into a business.
Gold, 95 points 100% Cabernet Sauvignon Restrained aromas of red fruits and cream that continue on the palate. There’s a mouthfilling weight but with sufficient acidity to keep everything fresh and pleasing. Enjoy now.
Chateau Changyu Moser XV Purple Air 2016
China, Ningxia, Chateau Grown 75 cl
Cabernet Sauvignon
Leading Chinese wine estate Château Changyu-Moser XV has just released 'Purple Air Comes from the East', an ultra-premium 100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon from the chateau’s Ningxia vineyards. A limited production of 6,300 bottles of the 2016 vintage were made at Changyu’s flagship winery in Ningxia, North West China.
Chief Winemaker at the estate, Austrian Lenz M. Moser, said: ‘It’s a wine which I believe is the future of Ningxia. We worked very hard to bring this new style of wine to life. It’s very harmonious, more fruit-driven than anything else. I tried to bring out the bright fruit of Ningxia Cabernet, in a very subtle form, lighter in alcohol. I’ve worked very hard on it, reduced the wood treatment to bring out the typicity of the region.’
Moser spends the entire harvest period in Ningxia, as well as making regular visits to the Chateau throughout the year, working closely with Head Winemaker Mr Fan and Assistant Winemaker Emma Yu. He adds:
‘I couldn’t resist making an icon wine. It has a very Chinese-looking label and it is going to raise the bar again for the Chateau. We have a clear vision - to ensure that the wines of Changyu-Moser XV are not just among the very best of China, but also belonging in the company of the world’s finest.
The striking label was created by a Chinese calligrapher with each character representing the name of the wine, which means ‘bringing fortune and luck from the East.’ In traditional Chinese symbolism, purple symbolizes divinity and immortality and in modern times, purple is used to represent love or romance. It’s also Moser’s favourite colour.

TASTING NOTES BY LENZ M. MOSER
14.3% ABV - This is the lowest of our top wines and the acidity level of 5.4 G/L is also a welcome indicator of freshness. We learn from Bordeaux and its approach to “la frecheur”.
Beautiful floral aromas on the nose, leading to more complex red and dark berry fruit notes, with savoury hints of cedar, tobacco and a warm touch of vanilla from subtle wood treatment – all in perfect harmony, with a built in “feel good” factor.
On the palate, luscious, generous and moreish with a delightful freshness. A top wine from Ningxia yet we have focused on elegance and finesse, the wine has intensity and complexity without being overbearing or overwhelming.
Lenz M. Moser: ‘We believe this wine will pave the way for a new breed of Ningxia wines, where the focus is on the pure pleasure of drinking.’
Since it is my second vintage it is hard to say when peak drinking will be reached, however, judging from the quality of the grapes at harvest, it will drink well for a minimum of 15 years. The wine is still super young, yet already a real pleasure to enjoy.
It is certainly the best ever red I have been involved in making. We worked very hard to bring this new style of wine to life. And I will dedicate this very special creation to the leaders of Changyu and all involved in making this wine. It takes a great team to achieve, now the ultimate jury is out with the opinion formers and our customers to give the final verdict.
PRODUCTION NOTES
- 2016 was a truly great year in Ningxia - 2016 is richer, more flavour and tannins than in the other great year, vines between 12 – 18 years old

- we have chosen the blending components barrel by barrel, selecting grapes only from the very best parcels of our estate vineyards
- 100% Cabernet Sauvignon (small and healthy berries with brown seeds and 24 -25 brix)
- Aged in barriques (5 different coopers, French, medium toast, 100 % first use) in the barrel cellar at the Chateau for 24 months
- Growing, fermenting and blending under supervision of Lenz M. Moser (Chief Winemaker Chateau Changyu Moser XV) who spends the entire harvest period in Ningxia – and a total of five times at the Chateau – ca. three months in total per year

- 2016 marks the second harvest of Lenz M. Moser at the Chateau
– after collaborating with Changyu in Yantai (Shandong province) 10 years prior, the Chairman and CEO of Changyu and LMM agreed that LMM will be in charge of CCMXV from 2015 on wards, making and also marketing the wine.

Leading Ningxia winery Château Changyu-Moser XV has just released the world’s first and only Cabernet Sauvignon Blanc de Noir aged in French barriques. Made at the estate in North West China, from the free-run juice of small thick-skinned Ningxia Cabernet Sauvignon berries, and refined in French oak for twelve months, this new wine is a natural progression from the estate’s hugely successful unoaked white Cabernet Sauvignon (which Moser launched in 2017, as an innovative solution to the lack of suitable white varieties in the region).
‘White Cabernet is something which we did out of necessity,’ he said. ‘At the Chateau I had 250 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, only red grapes, but I had to have a white wine, so I got creative.’
Explaining how the Moser Family Blanc de Noir 2017 came about, Moser comments ‘We loved the unoaked, stainless steel version of our Blanc de Noir Cabernet Sauvignon so much, that we started experimenting by ageing the wine in barriques. After repeatedly tasting the barrels in the cellar we grew more and more confident this will be something spectacular – and indeed it is! All the credentials of our other, unoaked, White Cabernet have been refined with subtle wood treatment for 12 months. This gives it the harmony and complexity expected of a world-class white wine.’
The wine, aimed at independent specialists and high end on-trade, has an off-trade retail of around RRP £35. The 2017 maiden vintage has a limited production of 1,000 bottles, with a further 18,000 bottles’ worth of 2018 vintage in new French barrique - so, stay tuned for the second vintage release in Summer 2020.

Great mention for the white cabernet on BBC Saturday Kitchen. Partnered with Ken Hom’s Steamed Cod, ginger juice, spring onions and soy sauce with spicy noodles.
Olly Smith: ' This is the best vintage they’ve had, they have used a Champagne yeast, which gives a bit more elegance, they had perfect conditions for the grapes, so really delicious fruit. It’s stunning. China is in the top 10 wine producers, but within the next 50 years, will no doubt be the top, and the quality is rising every single year.
Fay Ripley: ‘That’s divine.’
Matt Tebbutt (presenter): If you didn’t know, I mean, I’m not an expert, but I’d think I was drinking a nice Provence rosé.’
NB: They referred to it on screen in the stockist info as white cabernet - but did reference it as a rosé in the dialogue. But that is up to them!
